SunCoast Blood Centers: Proud Member of BERC

Working Together to Save Lives When Disaster Strikes!

When disaster strikes, the need for blood can surge in an instant—whether due to natural catastrophes, mass trauma events, or unexpected emergencies. In these critical moments, community blood centers like SunCoast Blood Centers play a vital role. But what happens when local supplies run low or emergencies overwhelm a single region? That’s where the partnership between SunCoast Blood Centers and the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps (BERC) becomes a true game-changer.

What is BERC?

The Blood Emergency Readiness Corps (BERC) is a national network of community blood centers, established in 2021, designed to provide immediate transfusion support during large-scale emergencies. BERC’s mission is simple but powerful: to ensure that no community faces a blood shortage in the wake of disaster, regardless of where or when it occurs. Participating centers, including SunCoast, reserve extra units of blood on a rotating “on call” schedule, ready to ship lifesaving components wherever they are needed most.

Why Did SunCoast Join BERC?

SunCoast Blood Centers, serving the Sarasota and Bradenton regions of Florida, recognized the growing challenges of maintaining adequate blood supplies, especially as the frequency of mass trauma events and natural disasters increases. By joining BERC, SunCoast became Florida’s designated partner in this nationwide emergency response network, ensuring that the state can both give and receive critical blood support during times of crisis.

How the Partnership Works

  • Rotating “On Call” Schedule: Every three weeks, SunCoast and other BERC members set aside extra units of type O-positive and O-negative red blood cells—the most urgently needed types in emergencies. When BERC is activated, these units are shipped to the affected region without delay.

  • Rapid Response: Whether it’s a hurricane in Florida, a mass casualty event elsewhere, or a cyberattack disrupting regional supplies, BERC can mobilize blood products from across the country to fill urgent gaps. For example, after Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Debby, SunCoast received shipments from BERC partners to help stabilize local hospitals’ blood inventories while recovering from the storms’ impacts.

  • Mutual Support: The partnership is reciprocal. When Florida is not in crisis, SunCoast stands ready to send blood to other regions in need, embodying the spirit of national solidarity in healthcare.

Real-World Impact

SunCoast’s involvement with BERC has already made a tangible difference:

  • During Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Debby, widespread power outages and canceled blood drives led to critical shortages. Thanks to BERC, SunCoast received emergency shipments of blood from across the U.S., ensuring that patient care continued uninterrupted.

  • The network has also been activated for mass trauma events, such as school shootings and natural disasters in other states, with SunCoast contributing to the national response.

The Ongoing Need for Donors

While the BERC partnership enhances emergency preparedness, it also highlights the constant need for blood donors. Blood only lasts for 42 days, and platelets just five, making regular donations essential. SunCoast urges community members to donate proactively, not just in response to crises, to help maintain a stable supply for both every day and extraordinary needs.

A Model for the Future

The SunCoast-BERC partnership exemplifies how collaboration, planning, and community engagement can transform crisis response. By pooling resources and expertise, blood centers nationwide are better equipped to save lives—no matter where or when disaster strikes.

If you’re inspired to help, consider scheduling a donation with SunCoast Blood Centers. Your gift could be the one that makes a difference when it matters most.
