What are Lifeline Responders?
The SunCoast Blood Centers Lifeline Responders whole blood program is a pioneering initiative in partnership with county fire departments across Florida’s Gulf Coast. This program enables emergency medical services (EMS) personnel to administer O+ low titer whole blood transfusions directly at the scene
of traumatic injuries or severe bleeding emergencies —before the patient reaches the hospital.
Immediate, On-Scene Care
Specially trained EMS Captains are equipped to deliver whole blood transfusions at emergency scenes, targeting patients suffering from major blood loss or hemorrhagic shock.
Whole Blood vs. Saline
Traditionally, EMS would use saline solutions to stabilize trauma patients. However, saline does not replace the oxygen-carrying or clotting capabilities of blood. Whole blood, which contains all components (red cells, plasma, platelets), is much more effective for rapid stabilization and improving survival rates in these critical cases.
Advanced Equipment
The program uses temperature-controlled storage (such as the DDT APRU—Autonomous Portable Refrigeration Unit) to ensure blood remains viable and ready for use in the field.
Rapid Infusion
EMS Captains in key locations carry the blood and are dispatched to scenes based on 911 calls or requests from on-site paramedics. EMS personnel use rapid infusion devices, allowing them to administer two units of blood in about two minutes, with blood warmed to body temperature before transfusion.
