Frequently Asked Questions:

Why AB Platelets and Plasma?

AB plasma is universally compatible, meaning it can be given to patients of any blood type. This makes it invaluable in emergency situations where there’s no time to determine a patient’s blood type. Platelets, on the other hand, are crucial for blood clotting and are often used in cancer treatments, organ transplants, and other surgical procedures.

The NICU Connection

Newborns in the NICU often require specialized blood products:

1. Platelets: These tiny blood cells help prevent and stop bleeding, which is crucial for premature babies whose systems are still developing.

2. Plasma: It contains essential clotting factors and antibodies that can help protect fragile newborns from infections.

Why Not Whole Blood?

While whole blood donations are always needed, AB platelets and plasma have some distinct advantages:

Efficiency: A single platelet donation can yield several transfusable units, compared to whole blood which requires about five donations to make one unit of platelets.
Frequency: Platelet donors can give every 7 days, up to 24 times a year, while whole blood donors are limited to every 56 days.
Targeted impact: AB plasma can be used for any patient, maximizing its lifesaving potential.

The Current Situation

SunCoast Blood Centers, serving hospitals across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties, is experiencing an alarming shortage. Recent events have put unprecedented strain on our reserves, particularly for AB plasma and platelets.

How You Can Help

If you’re an eligible AB donor, consider giving platelets or plasma instead of whole blood. Your donation could be the lifeline that saves a precious newborn in the NICU or a patient in critical condition. Your donation is like being in their corner, helping them fight the fight.

SunCoast Blood Center’s mission is to serve YOU and others in our community by ensuring a safe, adequate supply of blood products, including pathogen-reduced platelets, and services for a range of local hospitals, cancer patients and soldiers actively serving in the U.S. military.
