For Catherine, the journey began with a simple request from her daughter. “Madeline is on the Blood Drive Committee at Lakewood Ranch High School and she asked me to come to the Donation Center with her,” Catherine explained. Madeline, on the other hand, was already familiar with blood donation through her school’s blood drives. “I’ve previously donated at the Lakewood Ranch High School blood drives,” she said. Unable to donate at her school’s blood drive, she visited the Lakewood Ranch Center to stay on track with her eligibility period, to maximize her life saving impact.

A Learning Experience

Both Catherine and Madeline were surprised by aspects of the donation process. Catherine remarked, “I forgot how quick and easy it is to donate.” Madeline added an encouraging note for first-time donors: “I thought that the needle would bother me the whole time, but after the first stick it’s painless!”

Their experience also opened their eyes to the local impact of their donations. Catherine learned about the immediate use of platelet donations for local cancer patients, while Madeline’s volunteer work at Sarasota Memorial Hospital had already shown her the importance of blood in healthcare.

Looking to the Future

Inspired by their experience, both Catherine and Madeline plan to continue donating regularly. Catherine has even expanded her donations to include platelets, which can be donated more frequently. “I’m going to try to donate platelets at least once a month if I can,” she shared enthusiastically.

Catherine expressed, “It was a great experience to donate with my daughter.
