As SunCoast Blood Centers celebrates its 77th anniversary, we are proud to share a story that perfectly reflects our mission and our people. Cora and Michael Buell, a married couple, have dedicated a remarkable combined total of 77 years of service to SunCoast Blood Centers.

Mike was working in our Hospital Services Lab when his work often brought him into contact with Cora, who was employed in the blood lab at Doctor’s Hospital. After one routine order, Cora remembers thinking how kind Mike sounded on the phone—and how easy he was to talk to. What began as a simple business interaction soon turned into a lunch date, and before long, a lifelong partnership.

Their secret to both a long and happy marriage and enduring careers? Split shifts. Mike worked days, while Cora worked evenings, allowing them to balance their professional dedication with family life. Beyond opposite schedules, their shared passion—for saving lives and for each other—proved to be the true foundation of their success.
